A causal relationship between centrosome defects (either structural or functional) and cancer development, progression, and aggressive clinical behavior has long been suspected, yet the underlying mechanism(s) have remained enigmatic. However, a recent publication in?Nature?by Godinho?et. al.1?offers an explanation for the link between centrosome amplification and cancers. This group demonstrated that centrosome amplification leads to enhanced Rac1 activity, resulting in compromised cell-cell adhesion and increased invasiveness. This study represents an important step forward in the expanding field of centrosome biology associated with human malignancies. |
